8:45 – 9:30am | Keynote Address: Dr. Tony Kern, Chief Executive Officer, Convergent Performance, LLC
In his typically humorous and engaging style, Dr. Tony Kern will present his viewpoint that we are operating in uncharted waters due to a variety of factors. Aviation is experiencing the largest generational handoff in the history of the industrial world. If that were not enough, strain on aging systems, work-life balance and a host of societal factors have placed mental health concerns at the forefront of safety. Using a variety of case studies, Tony will suggest a few things we all must do to navigate safely though these turbulent times. These will include techniques to assume less, verify more, communicate more and add a level of situational awareness that requires expecting the unexpected.
9:30 – 10:30am | Session 1 – Executive Panel: Business Aviation Safety Challenges
As aviation has grown from its pioneering days, we have often taken for granted the success of the industry in moving people and goods from point to point around the world. Passengers trust the safety and the reliability of scheduling and appreciate that the sector has made travel more convenient. Yet no organization can take the overall complex system for granted as they manage new operational challenges in the future. This panel will discuss how we need to work together to get to even higher levels of safety.

An SMS brings a proactive approach to managing risk. Looking at the evolution of SMS requirements and regulations, especially in the United States, this series of speakers will discuss what has worked within SMS programs.

If we want to continuously enhance aviation safety, we must move beyond the current metrics of success. This session uses an extensive dataset on professional pilot culture to discuss the nuance of measuring culture and we identify three core concepts necessary to improve culture. We triangulate the data-rich research with real-world examples of how culture impacts recruitment, retention, and your organization’s safety. This session provides practical takeaways ready for implementation and is geared to professionals thinking about their organization’s safety culture or the flight deck microculture.
